Lifesaving checks
We routinely screen for oral cancer during your regular check-ups to look for any signs of this increasingly prevalent disease. If problems are detected at an early stage, they can be treated much more successfully. We make sure to examine:
- Head and neck
- Lips
- Cheeks
- Roof of the mouth
- Tongue
- Floor of the mouth
To check for:
- Odd swellings or other unexplained changes
- Enlarged lymph nodes
Oral cancer screening is particularly important for patients who smoke or drink alcohol as they are at a higher risk of developing mouth or throat cancer. This routine, but potentially lifesaving, screening is also another good reason for you to see us on a regular basis, but please tell us if you notice any changes to your mouth in between appointments. In particular, look out for:
- Ulcers which do not heal in three weeks
- Red and white patches in the mouth
- Unusual lumps or swellings in the mouth, or head and neck area
