Steve graduated from the University of Edinburgh with Honours in 1992 and won the Hepburn Prize for the Best Senior Student in Dental Hospital Practice. In 1997, he gained a Diploma in Postgraduate Dental Studies from the University of Bristol. Also that year, he was appointed as a part-time clinical teacher at Dundee Dental Hospital and School, and Honorary Clinical Teacher at the University of Dundee in the Sections of Operative Dentistry, Fixed Prosthodontics, Endodontology and Integrated Oral Care. He taught there on a part-time basis until 2006.
He was admitted as a member of the Institute of Learning and Teaching in 2001 and awarded Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy in 2007. He completed a Master of Science degree at the University of Bristol, graduating in 2008 with his thesis entitled “Bonded (Sealed) Amalgam Dental Restorations – Longevity and Clinical Outcome”.
As well as owning and running The Dental Practice, Aberdeen, Steve currently holds appointments at the University of Edinburgh as an Online Tutor on the MSc in Primary Dental Care programme, as Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Aberdeen and as Senior Clinical Teaching Fellow, leading the applied dental materials teaching at Aberdeen Dental School. He is also heavily involved in postgraduate dental education having lectured throughout the UK. In addition, he has extensive experience of tutoring the dental team, in particular, dental nurses.
He is actively involved in research, having published original research articles in peer-reviewed journals with his main research areas being bacterial photodynamic therapy and the clinical performance of dental materials. He has written an undergraduate textbook on the clinical application of dental materials which was published in December 2012.
Steve is a referee for a number of dental journals and a key influence for some dental material and equipment manufacturers. He was awarded Fellowship of Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in 2016 and is currently serving as the College’s representative on the Editorial Board of the journal, “Dental Update”. Steve is an examiner for the MFDS examination at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and has recently been appointed as the external examiner for the MSc in Restorative Dentistry at the University of Birmingham.
Outside dentistry, Steve enjoys gourmet food and fine wine, watching and playing football, chess and learning languages.
